The Carolina’s PGA Section recently named Paige Cribb as its first female president. The section is the largest of the PGA of America’s 41 sections. Paige is a Georgetown native and is currently the director of student support for Coastal Carolina University’s Golf Management Program.
Approximately 28,000 men and women make up the ranks of the PGA of America which is the organization for club and teaching professionals. There about 1,000 women members of the PGA. The Carolina’s PGA has roughly 2,000 members with about 100 being women.
Cribb has served as one of the 10 CPGA area directors and served as the section’s secretary and vice-president before being recently elected to the president’s position.
Cribb began playing golf as a youth with her father and grandfather at the former nine-hole Georgetown Country Club. At nine years of age she entered her first junior tournament and won. Her playing ability continued to improve and ended up playing her college golf at UNC Wilmington. As with many PGA professionals, Cribb aspired to play professional golf, but she had a change of heart and decided to get involved in the business of the game. She enrolled in the PGA apprentice program about a year after her graduation. There was a choice to be made for her as the LPGA focuses predominately on teaching, while the PGA not only teaches the game, but also the business aspect as well.
Cribb’s first job as a PGA apprentice was at Legends Resort and followed that with assistant positions at Heritage Golf Club, Wachesaw East and the now closed Bay Tree Golf Plantation. For a brief period Cribb served as an instructor and salesperson at Charleston National Golf Club, but then returned to Wachesaw East for seven years with the last five as head professional.
Her former employer at Bay Tree Plantation, Charlie Thrash hired Cribb in 2008 to work in the CCU Professional Golf Management program. The program awards a four-year business degree which specializes in golf management and includes steps toward PGA of America membership.
I am sure that Paige Cribb will be an outstanding president for the Carolina’s PGA and will work tirelessly to achieve the PGA’s goal of “Growing the Game”.
