Coastal Carolina University has announced that it has hired Conway native Kevin McPherson to head up its golf program. McPherson was entering his third year as the head men’s golf coach at newly renamed Georgia Regents University Augusta (formerly known as Augusta State). It is hopeful that he takes over the Chanticleer men’s program on October 1st states athletic director Hunter Yurachek.
McPherson is being hired a few weeks after the surprising resignation of long-time CCU golf coach Allen Terrell. Terrell’s resignation came after 13 seasons with the program. Terrell stated that he was leaving to head a new golf school with former Coastal standout Dustin Johnson at The TPC of Myrtle Beach.
McPherson is a 1998 graduate of Conway High School and the brother of LPGA golfer Kristy McPherson. Before taking over the men’s program at Augusta State, he spent three seasons coaching the women’s team there while assisting with the men. During that time, the Jaguars won the 2010 and 2011 NCAA men’s golf championships.
McPherson said “It was a difficult decision. I just didn’t want to miss the boat and an opportunity that comes around maybe once in a lifetime. And it might be 20-plus years before that same opportunity comes around because it is a highly credited job that a lot of people would be interested in.”
