Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday in an effort to grow the game of golf and increase the local participation has launched their nonprofit foundation and initiative, Project Golf. The project will focus energy and attention on player development. That doesn’t mean just junior golfers, they want player development for potential golfers of all ages!
One of the main areas that Project Golf will focus on will be the junior golfers. They will have a variety of junior golf programs along the Grand Strand that will be marketed and promoted, all in an effort to develop additional players, and thus additional rounds of golf. The local junior golf programs include The First Tee local chapters, SC Junior Golf Association, SC Golf Center junior series, PGA Junior League Golf and The Myrtle Beach Junior Golf Foundation.
The intent will be to market the game as an activity that is engaging and fun. They will promote nine hole rounds and shorter rounds and tie everything together with social activities. An example would be a nine-hole round or tournament combined with a concert, party or even a beer tasting for the above-21 crowd. For this area, access and cost usually are not an issue – as there are many affordable courses in Myrtle Beach that can be played.
The events will be heavily promoted on social media as well as through their website at www.projectgolf.org. The purpose of the initiative is not to create professional golfers, but those that want to participate is the great sport for a lifetime. By combining the game with other events and making it fun, they hope to open the door of the sport to a much larger audience, especially the younger crowd. Many people may be intimidated by having the learn the game and getting instruction. The hope is to break down the walls around the instruction stigma.
The first event that Project Golf will be holding is a fundraising event on July 24th at the House of Blues in Barefoot Landing. It’s called the Acoustic Jam for Juniors Concert and features Sister Hazel members Ken Block and Drew Copeland, Javier Colon and Josh Kelley. Tickets start at $35 and can be bought at the House of Blues or at www.eventbrite.com. Doors open at 7pm, so be there and join the party for the Project Golf kickoff.
