Golf courses on the Grand Strand have seen a decline in the past few years, but if recent numbers released are any indication, things are turning around.
The 2015 spring golf season showed the first upswing in momentum since the previous two seasons showed a decline. Rounds played on the nearly 90 public-access courses increased 2.1 percent in the combined spring months of March, April and May compared to the same months in 2014, according to statistics compiled by Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday.
This was the first spring season increase since three consecutive years of growth from 2010-12. This year’s increase is also encouraging when you take into account less than ideal weather, as March and early April featured cool temperatures and a lot of rain and early May featured a tropical storm. The Strand has had three consecutive years in which poor weather has adversely impacted rounds played in at least one of the three spring months.
SPRING ROUNDS PLAYED
MONTH 2015 2014 % CHANGE
March 354,042 337,243 +5%
April 385,602 373,168 +3.3%
May 309,246 316,419 -2.3%
TOTAL 1,048,890 1,026,830 +2.1%
The fall season is just around the corner and hopefully the momentum will continue.
