The kids are back in school, the days are getting a little shorter and across the Grand Strand a feeling of blissful calm has descended like a gentle blanket. Autumn has come to the Grand Strand. And that means better weather, cheaper fares and shorter wait times at the area’s 100 championship golf courses. With so many amazing local golf courses, each engineered by the most respected names in golf and tailored towards every playing level, it may be difficult to decide where you and your friends want to play first. Not to worry, the Myrtle Beach Golf Authority is here to make your decision a little easier with in-depth looks at a few of Myrtle Beach’s premier courses.
This week we will be taking a look at Farmstead Golf Links. Situated just a short drive away from North Myrtle Beach, Calabash, NC is known far and wide as the “Seafood Capital of the World”. This charming fishing village is home to incredible waterfront restaurants, spectacular fishing and some of the finest golf courses in the world. Amidst this incredible backdrop, you’ll find the one and only Farmstead Golf Links. There are no gimmicks at this exquisite course. Just incredible golf, at a reasonable price, in an unbeatable natural local.
Designed in 2001 by the legendary duo of Willard Byrd and David Johnson, Farmstead Golf Links is a Par 76 layout measuring 7200 yards from the tips. Like all true Links style courses, Byrd and Johnson incorporated much of the surrounding vegetation and natural beauty into their design. The fairways are framed by a forest of sea oats and pristine lakes, creating a serene coastal feel.
All in all, Farmstead Golf Links has garnered the reputation of being one of the most player-friendly courses on the Grand Strand. Numerous mounds border the course’s generous fairways. Various water hazards add to the overall beauty of the course, only coming into play when catching the most wayward of shots. Immaculate greens are strategically defended by well-placed sand hazards, but only with the trickiest of pin placements will you need difficult carries to get you to the hole. Subtle undulations on the greens contribute to a devilish putting challenge, making solid short game strategy critical for success.
There are five Par 3s throughout the course with three alone on the back nine. Don’t get fooled, however, for these are merely the calm before the maelstrom. The true challenge comes with Farmstead’s iconic finishing hole, a gargantuan 767- yard Par 6. The region’s only par 6, this monstrous finishing hole begins with a long drive into a wide sweeping fairway in South Carolina and concludes on a large undulating green in North Carolina. After finishing out a round at Farmstead, golfers can retire to the comfort of the Georgian style clubhouse for celebratory drinks on the waterfront veranda.
If you are a fan of incredible golf at a reasonable rate, Farmstead Golf Links is a can’t miss experience. Include Farmstead Golf Links into your next Myrtle Beach golf vacation when you create your own custom golf package today with the Myrtle Beach Golf Authority!
