The northern end of the Grand Strand is home to a plethora of Myrtle Beach golf courses. From locals favorites, to upscale challenges, North Myrtle Beach and up by the North Carolina border and a wide variety courses that will challenge and please golfers of all skill levels booking a Myrtle Beach golf package. The greater Myrtle Beach area is home to some 100 golf courses, so naturally there’s some competition (friendly, of course) between them. Here are the top five golf courses on the North Strand (from North Myrtle Beach into North Carolina) as ranked by golfers:
#5: Dye Club at Barefoot Resort
The Dye Club at Barefoot Resort is one of three courses Pete Dye designed on the Grand Strand (the other two being Prestwick Golf & Country Club in Surfside Beach and DeBordieu Club south of Pawleys Island). The Dye Club at Barefoot has holes framed by steep mounds, a mix of huge, sandy waste areas and tiny pot bunkers, and railroad tie-rimmed water hazards. Careful consideration is needed on the par 5’s.
#4: Glen Dornoch
Featuring the Intracoastal Waterway Glen Dornoch, a Clyde Johnston design, is as scenic as it is difficult. As the Scottish name suggests, the course has large, undulating greens and small pot bunkers at strategic points. The closing stretch of holes is the key, with three holes where the Intracoastal and its outlying marshes are both a constant concern and a source of wonderful water views. Best of all, there’s no houses at Glen Dornoch, which means no worries of ending up in a backyard.
#3: Tiger’s Eye
One of the four “Big Cat” courses at Ocean Ridge Plantation in Sunset Beach, North Carolina, Tiger’s Eye is a Tim Cate design that quickly became known as one of Myrtle Beach’s best. With expansive bunkering and large, undulating greens Tiger’s Eye as an extra large feel, which encourages players to swing confidently, even if there is danger just around the corner. Water hazards on the course are lined with walls of boulders, giving them a uniquely forbidding, yet mysterious, look.
