Possum Trot Golf Club in the North Myrtle Beach is set to close their doors come September of 2019. The Glens Group has operated Possum Trot through a long-term lease that expires on Sept. 30 and is not being renewed or extended by the course’s owners. The Glens Group also manages Glen Dornoch Golf Links and Shaftsbury Glen, both of which will remain open.
Speculation has been rampant about what could happen to the 160+ acre property once the golf course closes. Many think that single family homes could be built on the property, since it is zoned SF-6. This is the popular opinion among most in the Myrtle Beach golf industry.
The nearly 170-acre property is owned by a trust involving dozens of members of the Bell, Edge and Gore families. A representative of the owners could not be reached for comment. So, looks like we will have to wait to find out until at least September.
You might remember that Club fitter and club repairman Al Cloyd is based at Possum Trot. He has plans to move his operation to the Beachwood driving range that is just down the street, where a building will be built for him to use. According to Cloyd, Beachwood plans to activate lights on the driving range, which will soon begin remaining open into the evening.
Possum Trot has been a large part of North Myrtle Beach golf for over 50 years. The 6,966-yard, par-72 Russell Breeden design has been consistently popular since it opened in 1968 as a course that has the budget conscience player in mind when setting their greens fees.
More golf course closures for redevelopment are likely on the Strand with homebuilders looking for large tracts of land during the uptick in the housing market. In 2005 – 2007, approximately 20 Grand Strand golf courses closed during a similar upswing in the housing market. The Grand Strand golf market, from Georgetown to Southport, N.C., still has approximately 90 courses.
When planning your spring or summer Myrtle Beach golf package, be sure to add Possom Trot to your list and take the opportunity to play this long-standing North Myrtle Beach golf course before it’s closed.
