Two Grand Strand Golf courses reopened this week after closing earlier this season for renovations and repairs.
Shaftesbury Glen Golf & Fish Club and Pearl Golf Links West both reopened earlier this week with newly renovated greens. Both courses changed their greens from the older bentgrass to ultradwarf bermudagrasses. This change comes as part of a continued effort by the Myrtle Beach golf community to eliminate the cool weather bentgrass from Grand Strand courses.
According to Shaftesbury’s director of operations, Ryan McCarty, the greens have been aerified and verticut three times during the course of the summer.
“The greens are full and lush and look fantastic,” McCarty said. “Especially with this heat, it was the right move. These greens love the heat, they’re very tolerant to it and they grow like crazy.”
First opened in 2001, Shaftesbury Glen measures 6,935-yards from the back tees and offers traditional English style layout. The course boasts a gorgeous English manor clubhouse that features a fully-stocked pro shop, bar, and restaurant. This renowned golf course has been recognized with numerous awards throughout its life, including being named as Golf World and Golf Digest “Places to Play” 2005 and the Myrtle Beach Golf Course Owners Association “Golf Course of the Year” in 2009.
Pearl Golf Links West, in addition to renovating its greens, also took the opportunity to make several improvements around the course during the closure. In addition to improving several tee boxes around the course, numerous trees were removed from around the greens to increase airflow and expose exquisite views of the Calabash River. Key upgrades were also made to the drainage system in several problem areas throughout the course.
“The course is immaculate,” said Pearl general manager, Bob Gentile. “The greens are rolling great and I’m kind of excited about opening that line of sight on some of the greens, too.”
Designed by Dan Maples in 1986, Pearl Golf Links West is a fun, albeit challenging, course that showcases stunning views of the surrounding marshland. The course’s strategic water hazards and beautiful, undulating greens perfectly capture the essence of the links-style course and deliver an unbeatable experience to golfers lucky enough to play it.
