It’s summertime in the Grand Strand! That means sun, surf and world class golf. With over 100 golf courses engineered by top designers and geared to every playing level, Myrtle Beach is the place to be when golf season rolls around. With so many amazing golf courses it might be difficult to decide just where you and your friends might want to play first. Never fear, the Myrtle Beach Golf Authority is here to make your decision a little easier with in depth looks at a few of Myrtle Beach’s premier courses.
This week we will be taking an in depth look at Azalea Sands Golf Club. Located on Highway 17, just half a mile from the beach, Azalea Sands lies at the heart of North Myrtle Beach. For nearly 40 years, Azalea Sands has offered countless generations of golfers an incredible experience at a reasonable price.
Designed in 1972 by the legendary architect, Gene Hamm, Azalea Sands was designed as a traditional “beach course” that’s playable for golfers of all skill levels. The 6,902 yard course features long narrow fairways among towering pine trees and treacherous bunkering. With a course rating of 72.5 and a slope of 123, Azalea Sands is the perfect combination of challenge and enjoyability.
Azalea Sands layout is both efficient and balanced. Two relatively straightforward Par 3s on the front nine are followed by long, sand hazard protected holes on the back nine. Likewise, low risk Par 5s on the front nine are perfectly contrasted by well-placed water hazards across the fairway of the back nine. The course’s greens feature TifDwarf grass, an older form of Bermudagrass that precedes the proliferation of ultradwarfs across the Grand Strand.
In 2019, the management of Azalea Sands was taken over by the leadership of Eagle Nest Golf Club. Renovations to the course’s club house have been scheduled for summer 2019. Once renovations are complete Azalea Sands’ clubhouse will include a restaurant and sports bar that will have hours that extend well beyond the golf club hours to serve area residents. Azalea Sands will remain open throughout the duration of the renovations. The new management has said that the work being done on the course will in no way impede golfer’s ability to enjoy the course.
No Myrtle Beach golf trip would be complete without playing a round of golf at this iconic course. Azalea Sands Golf Course can be added to any Myrtle Beach golf courses to create the perfect custom golf trip for you and your friends.
