Sad that the 2017 US Open is over? The US Open is usually one of golf’s most grueling tests – of skills, stamina and mental clarity. The strongest of the players survive and thrive and find themselves at the top of the leaderboard on Sunday. The Grand Strand is fortunate to have a number of former US Open winners design a few of the Myrtle Beach golf courses. Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Raymond Floyd and Larry Nelson are all past US Open winners that have designed courses here in Myrtle Beach.
First up is the designer of Long Bay and Pawley’s Plantation golf courses – perhaps the best golfer in history, Jack Nicklaus. Jack designed both of these courses, which opened the same year, 1989. The layout of both courses is challenging and Pawley’s Plantation features the back nine holes that are played along the saltmarsh, creating one of the most memorable rounds of golf to be played in the Myrtle Beach area.
Next, we have the King – Arnold Palmer. Arnold Palmer has four Myrtle Beach golf courses with his signature stamp on them. He designed all three golf courses at Myrtle Beach National and then Rivers Edge. The most popular of the three at Myrtle Beach National is King’s North. This is the golf course with most known hole in the area called The Gambler. Rivers Edge has been ranked in the top 100 public golf courses in America by Golf Digest.
Gary Player won the 1965 US Open and he designed Blackmoor golf course right here in Myrtle Beach. Blackmoor has remained a player’s favorite here in the area because of the rewards that one will collect with outstanding shot-making. They also boast come of the best customer service in the area at this golf course.
Raymond Floyd, winner of the 1986 US Open at Shinnecock Hills is the designer of the impeccably conditioned Myrtle Beach golf course, Arrowhead. This particular golf course rewards players that are accurate off the tee and those that have a good putting stroke. There are also a few of the holes that offer the water views from the Intracoastal Waterway.
Last US Open winner that has a design here in Myrtle Beach is Larry Nelson, winner of the 1983 US Open at Oakmont. Larry Nelson has designed the Avocet Course at Wild Wing, which features one of the area’s greatest and shortest Par 4’s.
